The tour starts with a visit of the most ancient part of Riga – the Old Town. Its rich heritage of culture makes it a lively summary of the Latvian history. During the Old Town tour we will also visit the beautiful Synagogue of Riga.
Just next to the Old Town lies the Moscow suburb of Riga, named by the old trading route to Moscow. Since the 1930s it also houses the emblematic and colourful Central Market. The route will take you through the market to the territory of the former Riga Ghetto, now a quiet suburb of Riga. We will make a stop at the Ghetto Museum that tells the history of the Latvian Jewish community during the 20th century.
The next destination is the elegant Art Nouveau district. This style shaped our city in the early 20thcentury, creating a whole new approach to architecture and decorating the buildings of Riga will fascinating creatures and mystical symbols.
Our last stop is the Kipsala Island just across the bridge. It used to be inhabited by fishermen and port workers but in the last decades has turned into one of the most attractive areas of Riga because of its beautiful wooden houses, the peaceful atmosphere and the fantastic view of the city across the river. In Kipsala we will visit the ZanisLipke Memorial to hear about a man who saved many Jews to escape from the Ghetto during the WWII and gave them shelter. The Museum was nominated as a candidate to the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2014.
