LIGO

LIGO

Ligo is the midsummer night’s celebration in Latvia. How do you describe something as important as this? It is the shortest night of the year, the apogee of nature, the symbol of fertility and life itself. Ligo as a law is celebrated in the countryside. Even the most loyal burgher leave the city walls for at least two days to get reunited with nature. We can’t imagine what this night meant to our ancestors but still, we keep the traditions alive. Men build bonfires, women make wreaths and prepare special dishes, the houses are being decorated with birch-boughs. In the evening people gather around the bonfires, sing songs and wait for the sun to rise. It’s all done out of respect for the Sun. It couldn't get more serious but it is so much fun as hardly anything else
