JELGAVA

JELGAVA

Jelgava is known as the former capital of the Duchy of Courland, and was the capital of the Courland Governorate until 1919. It has always played an important role in Latvia's culture, education, and trade, therefore beautiful buildings were constructed to house administrative institutions, universities, and churches, but above all - the residence of the Duke.

Jelgava is also a good story teller, its specality being the history of Latvia. It was almost completely destroyed in the 20th century and you can still see the scars in the city's proud face. However it's significance hasn't faded, many of the beautiful buildings are being renovated, many cultural events are held in Jelgava, and many people visit it every year to see Jelgava's heritage and development.
